For this show, we tried an image based approach to light the characters in foreground. So we lighted the BG first, created a SkyDome of it by rendering a 360° camera placed where the hero characters are supposed to be, and finally use it as IBL on the foreground. A LOT of light samples were necessary to clean all that SSS flickering. But we passed through! (...well, the farm did)
Results are good, it was nice to test it on real production; but honestly, we returned to the "good old way" for the following shows: four or five well placed lights on each characters... and letting the wonderful Arnold GI makes his magic!
